Legendary Indian spinner and commentator Anil Kumble lauded fast-bowler Akash Deep for his exceptional performance on debut in the ongoing fourth Test against England in Ranchi.
Akash made a memorable debut against England at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, as he made an immediate impact by claiming three crucial wickets in his first spell in Test cricket. This show earned him praise from Kumble for his impactful contribution on Day 1 of the ongoing Ranchi Test.
The Indian debutant’s early strikes significantly dented England's batting lineup, with dismissals including Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Zak Crawley during the opening session of Day 1 in Ranchi.
Well, Kumble expressed satisfaction with the Indian cricket team management's decision to include Akash in the playing XI for the ongoing Test in Ranchi, saying his selection was well-judged.
Speaking to JioCinema at Lunch on Day 1 in Ranchi: “The team management certainly got it spot on. When Bumrah wasn't available for this game, there was an option to pick a fast-bowler.”
He further said, “Yes, we though Axar Patel might come in if the pitch was helpful for spinners but Akash Deep has certainly bowled very well. He bowls that much quicker and bowled in really good areas. He bowled good lengths which got the better of the batter.”
The former Indian head coach highlighted Akash’s exceptional consistency with his line and length, and it impressed him a lot since it was his first international game. His stellar bowling display disrupted England’s batting lineup, leaving them struggling at 57 for 3 wickets early on in Ranchi.
Kumble signed off by saying, “On this surface it's not easy for strokeplay. So that's something that the batters went searching for. But hats off to Akash, he just held his line. He was very consistent with his line and length. I thought he bowled exceptionally well for a debutant.”
