India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah troubled the England batters across the two innings of the second Test match in Vizag.
In reply to India’s first innings score of 396, the Three Lions were in a strong position at 114/2. However, the right-arm quick produced an incredible spell of reverse-swing bowling to bundle out the visitors for 253, returning with the remarkable figures of 6/45 in 15.5 overs.
In the fourth innings, the tourists were chasing a daunting target of 399 and Bumrah once again emerged as a chief destroyer, picking up three wickets to script India’s series-equalling 106-run victory.
Jasprit Bumrah finished the second Test with nine wickets to his name and deservedly earned the Player-of-the-Match award.
Days after the match, veteran India spinner R Ashwin heaped praise on Bumrah, saying that ‘Boomball’ was the real show stealer in their win against England in Vizag.
During the second Test, Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to pick up 150 Test wickets, in just his 34th match. The herculean effort also made him the first Indian pacer to achieve the No.1 position in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers.
“The real show stealer was BoomBall. Jasprit Bumrah has bowled extraordinarily. He is the leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets and also the No.1 ranked Test bowler. I am a huge fan of his and this is a Himalayan feat,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin also lauded Shubman Gill’s century in the second Test. Coming into the match, Gill had not scored a single half-century at No. 3 and questions were raised over his place in the side.
However, Shubman rose to the occasion when India needed him the most in their second innings, slamming 104 off 147 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes to propel the hosts to 255.
“There's no doubt about the amount of talent that Shubman Gill has. But the hundred justified just the kind of armor he had as a batter,” Ashwin added.
The off-spinner further said that the Indian team’s vibe and energy helped them win the second Test while comparing the ongoing Test series to the 2005 Ashes.
“We came into the fourth day with it all being even-stevens. But our extraordinary vibe, energy and team performance helped us level the series 1-1. England played an exciting Ashes series against Australia in 2005 and I followed that with great interest. I am getting a similar feeling of excitement about this series as well,” Ashwin remarked.
The five-match series is poised at 1-1 at the moment. The third Test is due to be held in Rajkot from February 15.
