On January 25, 2024, India and England began their five-match series with the first Test at Hyderabad. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first.
India bowled England out for 246 in 64.3 overs, with spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin both claiming three wickets and Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah striking twice. Ben Stokes led the way with 70, while Jonny Bairstow (37), Ben Duckett (35) and Joe Root (29) also contributed.
On the other hand, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma took the attack to England bowlers, especially debutant spinner Tom Hartley. Jaiswal welcomed the left-arm spinner with a six off the first ball he bowled in Test cricket and then hit another one for good measure.

Meanwhile, England recalled Ben Foakes for wicketkeeping duties for the first Test in Hyderabad. This was after Jonny Bairstow was preferred over Foakes for Test summer at home, especially in the Ashes 2023. Known as one of the best keepers in business today, Foakes is renowned for his lightning-fast reflexes and ninja-like movements.
However, the magician keeper suffered a blooper on the field, as in an attempt to collect a throw from the deep, Foakes wiped out all the stumps in the process.
On the first delivery of the third over, Indian captain Rohit Sharma flicked Mark Wood's inswinger to open his account. The fielder in the deep made an errant throw, prompting Foakes to charge to avoid probable overthrow.
Unfortunately, his eyes were fixed on the ball, and as he ran to retrieve the throw, he tripped on the stumps, knocking all three poles flat on the ground. His teammates and the on-air commentators all had a laugh as they witnessed the moment.
