IND v NZ 2023: New Zealand slip to second spot in ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after series defeat against India

The Kiwis have conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead to India in the ODI series.

New Zealand cricket team | BCCINew Zealand suffered a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat at the hands of India in the second ODI at Raipur on Saturday (January 21). As a result, the Kiwis lost the summit spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings for teams.

With this loss, New Zealand also conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and they have now slipped to No. 2 position in the Men’s ODI Team Rankings, making way for Jos Buttler-led England to occupy the top spot.

Before the second ODI, New Zealand sat at the top with 115 rating points. England were holding the second position with 113 rating points, followed by Australia (112 rating points) and India (111 rating points).

After a crushing defeat in Raipur, the BlackCaps are now at the second spot with 113 rating points and 3166 overall points. England and India are first and third respectively, also with 113 rating points. While England have 3,400 overall points, India have 4,847 overall points.

If India sweep the series 3-0 with a win in the third and final ODI at Indore on Tuesday (January 24), then they will become the number one side in the ODI rankings.

Talking about the Raipur ODI, Indian bowlers ran through the Kiwi batting line-up, bundling them out for a paltry 108 in 34.3 overs.

While Mohammad Shami returned with the remarkable bowling figures of 3 for 18 in his 6 overs, Hardik Pandya (2-16) and Washington Sundar (2-7) claimed two scalps each. The remaining three wickets were shared by Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur.

In reply, the Men in Blue overhauled the target in just 20.1 overs with Rohit Sharma (51) and Shubman Gill (40*) making vital contributions.
