India opted to bat first after Rohit Sharma won the toss started off a bit cautiously and lost the skipper for 34 runs with the score at 60 in the 13th over. After that New Zealand struck quickly as Virat Kohli (8) and Ishan Kishan (5) fell in quick succession.

But Shubman Gill continued his glorious form with the bat and hit his third ODI century and second in a row. His ton came in 87 balls and he added a few important runs, 64 with Suryakumar Yadav (31), and 74 runs with Hardik Pandya (28).

During his knock, Gill completed 1000 ODI runs in just 19 innings, becoming the joint second fastest with Imam Ul Haq and behind Fakhar Zaman who reached the milestone in 18 innings. He became the fastest Indian to the milestone beating Virat Kohli’s record.

However, as wickets fell around him, Gill switched gears and raced to his double century, his maiden in ODIs, with a flurry of sixes. He reached the milestone in only 145 balls. He hit 19 fours and 9 sixes in his knock.

In the process, he became the youngest to reach 200 in ODIs, at 23 years, beating Kishan’s record of 24 years, before getting out for 208 runs as India posted 349/8 in 50 overs.
