After their resounding 6-wicket victory over India in the second ODI, England overtook Australia to attain the top position in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table.

Chasing 337 to win, England rode on Jonny Bairstow’s 112-ball 124 and Ben Stokes’ blazing 99 off 52 balls to overhaul the target in 43.3 overs. The duo of Bairstow and Stokes made the mockery of Indian bowlers, stitching 175 runs for the second wicket in just 117 deliveries.

It was India’s third defeat in the competition but the Men in Blue retained the eighth spot in the rankings. A win in the third and final ODI against England will give Virat Kohli and company a chance to overtake Pakistan.

The new ODI Super League was launched by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in July last year.

13 teams, including 12 full members and Netherlands, will play eight three-match ODI series, four home and four away, over the next two years to determine top seven slots alongside hosts India at the 2023 World Cup.

Teams finishing bottom five in the competition will have to contest the global qualifier with top 5 associate nations in hope to square the last two World Cup spots.
