India completed a remarkable turnaround to win the series 3-1 after losing the first Test of the four-match series against England. On day three of the final Test, India won by an innings and 25 runs to end the misery of the visitors against spin with R Ashwin picking 32 wickets and Akshar Patel taking 27 wickets in the series.
India also booked a date with New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord's in June, and went back to the top of the Test rankings after back-to-back series wins against Australia and England. Virat Kohli-led side had lost the number one ranking in May last year to Australia, and New Zealand enjoyed a brief period at the top before India regained the prized position.
Trailing by 160 runs in the first innings after Rishabh Pant (101) and Washington Sundar (96*) helped India recover despite top order failure, England were bowled out for 135 with R Ashwin and Akshar Patel grabbing five-wicket hauls. The visitors lasted just five days combined in the two Tests played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
