Twitter was ablaze as cameras caught Ben Stokes laughing after grassing Shubman Gill’s catch on the opening day of the third Test between India and England in Ahmedabad.
During the second over of India’s innings, Gill edged a delivery from Stuart Broad to second slip, where Ben Stokes seemed to have caught the ball. However, the on-field umpire preferred to go upstairs while giving soft signal as OUT.
After seeing the replay from just one angle, third umpire C Shamshuddin decided to overrule the on-field soft signal and Gill survived.
While other England players expressed dissent at the third umpire’s decision, Stokes was seen laughing in a sarcastic manner.
Reacting on the incident, defending IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) tweeted: “‘You cannot do that, Ben Stokes!’”
Indian fans were also left bewildered by Stokes’ laughter and wondered whether he knew the catch was not clean.
Here are the tweets:
Earlier, India bundled out England for a paltry 112 in their first innings. Akshar Patel was the star with the ball for the hosts, taking 6 wickets for 38 runs. R Ashwin also chipped in with three scalps.
