Indian spinner R Ashwin was the toast of the fourth day of the first Test against England in Chennai, as the visitors were restricted to 178 in their second innings.
India resumed their innings from 257/6 and shortly lost Ashwin for 31 runs. Washington Sundar went on to make 85* as India folded for 337 runs. Dom Bess picked 4/76, while Archer, Anderson, and Leach picked two wickets.
In reply, Joe Root top-scored again with 40, while Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler, and Dom Bess made scores of 20 and more to help England make 178. But it was the effort of Ashwin, who had removed Rory Burns on the first ball of the innings, becoming only the third spinner to do so in Test history and first in 114 years.
He finished with figures of 6/61 and overall took 9 wickets in the match. India was set 420 to win the match and lost Rohit Sharma for 12, who was bowled by Jack Leach. India ended day 4 on 39/1, still needing 381 runs to win.
The day belonged to R Ashwin and his brilliant spell of bowling and he was rightly lauded by the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
