IND v ENG 2021: Cricket fraternity reacts as England don’t declare their second innings; get bowled out for 178

England captain Joe Root | BCCIThe England team continued to pile on runs in the second innings even as time became a problem for them, as they looked to press for a win in the first Test of the four-match series against India, in Chennai.

After bowling India out for 337 in their first innings, England began their second do on day 4 with a lead of 241 runs. Though they lost Rory Burns to the first ball of the second innings, caught by Rahane in slips off Ashwin, Joe Root (40), and contributions from Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler pushed the overall lead to over 400 runs.

It was a huge day for Ishant Sharma, as he completed 300 Test wickets in his 98th Test.

However, there were no signs of England declaring and putting India in to bat for even the last 20 overs of the day, surprising the on-air commentators and cricket experts on Twitter as well.

Coach Chris Silverwood and other coaching staff were seen discussing the scenario with captain Joe Root, but the declaration was not coming.

However, India finished the work as they bowled England out for 178 runs in their second innings. They set India a target of 420 runs to win the first Test. R Ashwin finished with figures of 6/61 in the second innings and 9 wickets in the match overall.
