Opener Shubman Gill made the legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar a fan of his brilliant batting, as the young opener added one more hundred to his account on Saturday (March 11).

Gavaskar was highly impressed with Gill’s batting technique, which is perfect for Test cricket, and predicted that the right-hander can easily score 8,000 to 10,000 runs in the format.

The former Indian captain’s comments came after Gill smashed his second Test century in the ongoing fourth and final game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Gill was also involved in a 113-run partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara (42) for the second wicket to give Team India a strong start in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 480 runs in the final Test in Ahmedabad.

Speaking on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar said:He has a lot of time. When he plays a defensive shot, the way he bends forward, even against Mitchell Starc, he presents a straight face of the bat and plays a forward defence, it was so pleasing to see. It shows that he has confidence.”

Gavaskar added, “He doesn't only play on the back foot. His foot moves forward and he has a solid defense, not just a solid attack. And in Test cricket, you need that. Shuffling back and forth against pace bowlers isn't very easy. But he picks the lines and lengths really well.”

The legendary batter also claimed that if Gill keeps his career in the right direction, he can easily score 8,000 to 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game.

He signed off by saying, “If he keeps his career in the right direction, he can easily score 8-10,000 runs in Tests.”
