Australia’s stand-in Test captain Steve Smith dropped a major hint about his career in the longest format of the game before walking to the field for the ongoing fourth and final Test against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

On Wednesday, March 8, Smith hinted that he may never again travel to India for Test matches, as the ongoing Ahmedabad Test could be his last in the country in the traditional format of the game.

As reported by Perth Now, Steve Smith stated: “I probably can't see myself coming back really, if I'm being realistic. But we'll wait and see, take it day by day, four years is a long time. I'll enjoy this one, hopefully, it's a great crowd and we can entertain them and ideally finish the series really well.”

Smith further said that he is taking things on a series-by-series basis, as the Australian team is aiming to ensure their best players are fit for big tournaments and marquee series.

The veteran right-hander added, “There’s plenty of dialogue there (with selectors), just talking about what’s coming up, what’s important and all those kinds of things. You want your best players available in particular for the big tournaments or big series.”

Smith signed off by saying, “The schedule is pretty busy these days so having guys in a good headspace to go out and perform is important. There’s of talk around that.”

Notably, Smith has so far appeared in nine Test matches in India and scored 757 runs at an average of 50.46. He had smashed a century in the 2017 Pune Test, which is widely regarded as one of the best knocks played by an overseas player on Indian soil.
