The second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 between India and Australia got underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on February 17, 2023. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first once again.
The Pat Cummins-led side made two changes to their side with Travis Head coming in for Matt Renshaw and Michael Kuhnemann making his Test debut as Australia went with three genuine spinners in the side. India made one change as Shreyas Iyer came into the XI, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.
David Warner once again fell to Mohammad Shami for 15 runs but added 50 for the first wicket with Usman Khawaja who looked very comfortable for someone playing his first Test in Delhi.
Then R Ashwin dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in one over and Australia kept losing wickets despite forming small partnerships. Khawaja and Handscomb added 59 runs for the fifth wicket and the left-hander looked set for a big one.
He was nullifying the spin by playing sweeps, both conventional and reverse ones, and the reverse sweep became the reason for his downfall.
He tried to reverse sweep Ravindra Jadeja in an effort for a four, but KL Rahul stationed on the leg side anticipated the shot and jumped in the air to take the catch one-handed and then tumbled on the ground.
This also became Ravindra Jadeja’s 250th Test wicket and as the Indian team celebrated, Khawaja was left stunned and distraught at the catch.
