Green suffered a fractured finger during the second Test in Perth vs South Africa | TwitterAustralia team head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that injured all-rounder Cameron Green has an ‘outside chance’ of playing in the first Test of the Broder-Gavaskar Trophy series which will begin on February 9 in Jamtha, Nagpur.

Green, who had been mightily impressive since his debut against India in Adelaide in 2020, has been on the sidelines ever since breaking his finger during the Perth Test against South Africa and missed the third and final Test of the series.

The 23-year-old was named in Australia's squad in the hopes he would be match fit for the four-Test series starting Thursday in Nagpur. Pacer Mitchell Starc, who had also injured his finger in that match, will be missing the first Test in Nagpur.

"We've got a fair bit to work through before the first Test match, but we haven't put a clear line through him or... put him on the team sheet yet. He's made some significant steps forward in the last couple of days, probably to my surprise. So there's still an outside chance that everything going well he might be on the team sheet,” McDonald said to reporters on Saturday.

Australia are in the middle of a four-day warm-up regime in Bangalore before they head to Nagpur next week. Cameron Green had recently become IPL’s second most expensive buy ever in December when he was purchased at auction by the Mumbai Indians.

Australia last won a Test series in 2004, on the other hand, India holds the Border-Gavaskar trophy after triumphing in their last three series, including two back-to-back Test series wins in Australia.
