Australia openers David Warner and Aaron Finch both hit centuries, as well as, shared a record opening partnership to complete a 10-wicket win over India in the first One Day International (ODI) of the three-match ODI series at a packed Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (January 14).

The unbeaten 258-run partnership between Finch (110*) and Warner (128*) – the highest opening stand in ODIs for Australia against India, greatly complemented Australian bowling efforts in Mumbai to help the touring side to take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing ODI series.

India, the second-ranked ODI team in the world, had taken control after losing a crucial wicket in Rohit Sharma with Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul adding 121 runs together for the second wicket.

But the tourists then took the charge and turned the match in their favor, as the mid-innings collapse led India to settle for 255 that Australia chased down with more than 12 overs to spare at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

After the thrilling win over India, Finch heaped praise on his team for their “good performance” against Virat Kohli and his team while saying he was proud of the way his bowlers fought back in the first innings to put the hosts under pressure in the Mumbai ODI.

Finch said in the post-match presentation ceremony, “I believed the best way we fought again in the course of the center overs was spectacular. Shikhar and KL have been batting very well, trying to speed up. So, I’m happy with the best way the boys fought again. We may nonetheless brush up within the subject a bit however that occurs generally when the outfield is barely damp. Total, an excellent efficiency. All the time robust to beat India in India.”

He further added, “We could still brush up in the field a bit but that happens sometimes when the outfield is slightly damp. Overall, a good performance. Always tough to beat India in India.”

Meanwhile, the opening batsman also lauded Warner, saying: “He's been unstoppable for quite some time now. Quite special. Once he gets in, he has so many options to score. Always great to bat with him. Of course, India is a quality team and we expect them to bounce back.”
