In his maiden assignment as Test captain, Shubman Gill led the Indian team from the front on the tour of England, comprising five matches.
Gill finished the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as the leading run-getter, amassing a staggering 754 runs in 10 innings, including four hundreds. His stunning exploits helped India drew the series 2-2.
Days after the end of the hard-fought series, India batter Karun Nair heaped praise on Shubman Gill, saying that the way Test skipper held everyone together and the encouragement he gave was great to see.
“The way Shubman held everyone together and the encouragement he gave was great to see. He was crystal clear with his communication from the beginning. To achieve what he did as a batter, while also leading the team…as a leader, he exemplified the spirit of Gauti bhai," Nair said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.
Nair, who earned his place in the Indian Test side after eight years following a prolific domestic season, showed class on the tour of England but failed to convert his starts into meaningful scores. His scores in eight innings were 0, 20, 31, 26, 40, 14, 57 and 17.
“I was disappointed at not being able to convert the start at The Oval into a century. But looking back, it was quite important to grind my way on that first day with the team in a tricky position," Nair stated.
“I’d done well there previously; I’d gotten a 150 for Northants against Surrey. The nerves were there, but I was feeling good. I was hoping to convert, which I couldn’t," he added.
“It was an up-and-down series in that sense and I did reflect a lot. But it’s also important to let go of what has happened and look forward to what I need to do in the next few months," he continued.
Karun Nair will miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy for Central Zone due to a blow to his finger in the last innings of the fifth Test against England.
Nair reportedly suffered a minor fracture on his finger after a rising ball struck him in India’s second innings at The Oval.
