Former spinner Harbhajan Singh didn’t hold back as he reminded Michael Vaughan about his prediction going awfully wrong for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after India's and thrilling six-run win in the fifth against England at the Oval.
England were in a dominant position on Day 4 when Harry Brook (111) and Joe Root (105) combined for a 195-run fourth-wicket stand that propelled the hosts past 300. At 301/3, they were favorites but Indian bowlers staged a great fightback, claiming three late wickets to reduce them to 339/6 at stumps.
On the final day, the Three Lions were 35 runs away from chasing a 374-run target, with four wickets in hand. However, Mohammed Siraj once again stepped up under pressure, returning with five wickets to propel the visitors to a narrow victory, thereby ending the series in a 2-2 draw.
After the outcome, Harbhajan reminded Vaughan and other former English cricketers that they had predicted the hosts winning the series 3-1, but the Indian team proved them wrong.
“I feel there is a big win hidden for India here. Yes, the scoreline shows 2-2. Michael Vaughan and many others predicted that it would be 3-1 or 3-0. I would tell them to look towards their side a bit and where England cricket stands. Our warriors have shown the level of Indian cricket,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.
When the Shubman Gill-led side landed in England, no one gave the tourists a chance following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin from the longest format.
However, the team in transition proved everyone wrong as they gave the hosts fought brilliantly in all five Tests.
“Unbelievable Test match and the way India have played the series, they deserve praise. When the team went to England, many people said it was young and there were no seniors. But see how the young team created history,” Harbhajan remarked.
