The fifth and final Test between India and England got underway at the Oval in London on Thursday (July 31). Invited to bat first, the visitors reached 72/2 when early lunch was taken due to a sharp shower, with Sai Sudharsan (25*) and Shubman Gill (15*) unbeaten in the middle.
In the post-lunch session, a pivotal moment took place as India lost the key wicket of Gill, who was run out in a careless manner.
Gill defended a full delivery to short cover and rushed for a single that was never on. His partner Sai Sudharsan was quick to signal him to stop, but the Indian captain had already committed.
Atkinson collected the ball cleanly in his follow through and hit the stumps, catching Gill short of his crease. It was a misjudgment that cost India dearly, breaking a promising 34-run stand.

During his 21-run knock, Shubman Gill reached a personal milestone in the first session, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 732 runs for the most by an Indian captain in a single Test series.
Gill now has 737 runs in nine innings on this England tour, averaging 92.12 with four centuries. He remains just 38 runs away from Gavaskar’s all-time Indian record of 774 runs in a bilateral Test series.
