Team India are currently 1-2 behind in the five-match Test series against England. The fourth Test is currently underway at Old Trafford, with the visitors facing a herculean task to save the game.

India are trailing England by 137 runs in the second innings heading into the final day in Manchester. Skipper Shubman Gill (78) and KL Rahul (87) batted brilliantly in the last two sessions on Day 4 to keep the team in the contest as the tourists reached 174/2 at stumps.

The loss in the fourth Test would mean conceding an unassailable 1-3 lead to England, which will put chief coach Gautam Gambhir under severe scrutiny. Under his guidance, India’s graph in the longest format has gone down drastically, winning just four of 13 Tests so far.

Before the England series, India conceded the away Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 to Australia and also suffered a humiliating first-ever home whitewash at the hands of New Zealand.

No wonder, former England pacer Steve Harmison feels Gambhir will get ‘pelters from everywhere’ if he goes back home having lost the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Harmison launched a scathing attack on Gambhir, saying that India head coach’s ‘stubbornness’ hasn’t ‘warmed up to anybody’ and he won’t be able to ‘sweet-talk his way’ out of the trouble he’s in currently.

“His stubbornness and his personality don’t warm up to anybody from the outside," Harmison said on talkSport.

“He is not the sort of character or personality who can sweet-talk his way out of things. Gautam Gambhir, as long as you win at home, you can get away with a few defeats away from home. But when you get beaten 3-0 against New Zealand at home and then you lose both the Border-Gavaskar and Anderson-Tendulkar, getting on a plane and going back to India, you are going to get pelters from everywhere," he added.

Harmison claimed instead of saving himself, Gambhir will end up digging a deeper hole for himself.

“He will show his teeth, he will snarl, and he will, if anything, dig a deeper hole or bring the bunker even further over the top. And I don’t think he can, with this team, because I am not sure how long Jasprit Bumrah has got left if you keep bowling him the way he is bowling," Harmison remarked.

In contrast, Gautam Gambhir has done exceptionally well as a white-ball coach for India. With him at the helm of affairs, the Men in Blue won the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year in Dubai. The team is also playing fearless cricket in T20Is.
