Team India lost the third Test against England at Lord’s by 22 runs while chasing 193 in the fourth innings. As a result, the Shubman Gill-led side conceded 1-2 lead to England in the five-match series.

Resuming the final day at 58/4, Ravindra Jadeja was India's only hope for a miracle after Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer caused another collapse early on Day 5, leaving the visitors eight down in their chase of 193.

The all-rounder put up a brave fight alongside No. 10 Jasprit Bumrah and last man Mohammed Siraj, scoring the slowest fifty in his Test career. England were left frustrated by Jadeja's presence since they had anticipated wrapping up the game in the first session itself.

However, former India head coach Ravi Shastri questioned Jadeja's conservative approach in the chase as he remained unbeaten on 61 off 181 balls with four boundaries and one six.

Shastri was vocal about it during commentary, asking Jadeja to go after the bowling, especially when Shoaib Bashir and Joe Root were operating with the field up. Still, the southpaw chose to take the safer route, which Shastri feels could have been avoided.

"I thought the time was before lunch, when Nitish Reddy and Jadeja were batting. One of the two should have gone for it. Because the field was up. The ball was a little harder. Once it got soft, you knew there would be one delivery with your name written on it. At some stage, I thought they could have taken more chances, and brought that deficit down to about 40, and then play the way they did," Shastri said on The Overlap Podcast.

England faced a similar situation in the 2019 Ashes against Australia at Headingley, where Ben Stokes went the aggressive way to take his team over the finishing line.

Shastri mentioned how Jadeja could have been an even bigger match-winner for India if he had 40 percent of the belief of Stokes.

"If Jadeja has even 40 percent of the belief of Stokes, he will win you more matches. Because there is no doubt about his talent. It’s just that he has to go and take charge. If he believes he can take charge, he can do it. He’s got three triple-hundreds in First-Class cricket. It took him a long time. Three only. And it took him ages to realise that he has batting potential," Shastri remarked.

After losing Lord’s defeat, India are now 1-2 behind in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. They can’t afford to lose any more matches or the series will be gone.

The penultimate Test of the five-match series is set to begin on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
