On the eve of the fourth Test against England in Manchester, India skipper Shubman Gill cleared a lot of air regarding the team combination.
The visitors have been dealt with big injury blows ahead of the all-important fixture, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy being ruled out of the remainder of the series while left-arm quick Arshdeep Sigh won’t be in consideration for the penultimate Test.
Addressing the media, Gill shared that even seamer Akash Deep, who picked up 10 wickets in India's 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, will not feature in the fourth Test.
The captain all but confirmed that Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj, who was recently added to the squad, will receive his debut Test cap on Wednesday (July 23).
“Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers, but I was prepared,” Gill told reporters.
“He (Anshul Kamboj) is very close to making his debut. We will see between Prasidh and Anshul tomorrow. We have seen his (Kamboj's) skill set. We have the belief that he can win matches for us,” he added.
“It is never easy when there are injuries. Nitish (Reddy) is missing and Akash is also unavailable for this match. (But) we have good enough players to take 20 wickets,” he continued.
Karun Nair, who reclaimed his place in the Indian Test side after eight years, has displayed class at the crease but hasn’t been able to convert his starts into meaningful scores. His scores in the first three games of the series read 0, 20, 31, 26, 40 and 14.
After a string of low scores, Nair’s spot in the side has come under the scanner but Gill backed him to turn around his form.
"We think he is batting well. First match he didn't play at his number. No issues with his batting. Once you are able to get to 50 and get in the zone. We are hopeful that he can turn it around," Gill said.
After sustaining finger injury on Day 1 at Lord’s, Rishabh Pant had to leave the field for medical attention and skipped keeping duties for the rest of the match. However, Gill confirmed that Pant will don the gloves at Old Trafford.
"Rishabh Pant will keep wickets in the fourth Test against England in Manchester," Gill said.
Having lost the first and third Tests at Headingley and Lord’s respectively, India currently trail England 1-2 in the five-match series. They can’t afford to lose any more matches or the series will be gone.
