The third day’s play in the recently held Lord’s Test between India and England saw a drama when home team’s openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, came out to bat for a brief period before stumps.

After Jasprit Bumrah bowled five deliveries in what was expected to be a two-over burst, Crawley called for the physio, prompting Indian players to accuse him of time-wasting. Tempers flared as skipper Shubman Gill confronted Crawley, asking him to be brave and bat.

Days after the Lord’s Test, which England won by a narrow margin of 22 runs, former cricketer-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain said that one of the highlights of the game was the way the visitors went after Crawley.

Despite the foul language being recorded on stump mic and Gill even making an obscene gesture, it was fast bowler Mohammed Siraj who was penalized by the ICC during the third Test.

After dismissing Duckett on Day 4, Siraj celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through, giving the southpaw a fiery send-off when he began his walk back to the pavilion. The right-arm quick also brushed shoulders with the English opener in the process.

As a result, Siraj was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and a demerit point was also added to his disciplinary record.

“One of the highlights of the Test, the way India went at Crawley. They (England openers) started 90 seconds later than they should have! They were very street-smart in the way they slowly walked down the stairs, pretending to get lost in the long room," Hussain said while speaking on Sky Sports.

“Then, Siraj was fired up. I think he’s a better cricketer when he’s fired up. You’d love to have Siraj on the side. I didn’t think he should’ve been fined. He went close to the line, he was right in Duckett’s face, he didn’t barge at Duckett," Hussain added.

“If anything, Duckett went in that direction to get off the pitch. It wasn’t a shoulder barge. I think it’s a game of emotions and you don’t need 22 robots. I love the tension," he further stated.

Siraj was guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

After losing the third Test, India are now trailing 1-2 in the five-match series. The penultimate Test is slated to be held at Old Trafford, Manchester from July 23.
