Stuart Broad, a former England fast bowler, has lambasted India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for poor shot selection in the second innings at Lord's. India lost the Lord’s Test despite chasing only 192 runs in the fourth innings.
Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse, and Jofra Archer managed to reduce India to 82/7, and it was only thanks to Ravindra Jadeja’s 61* and his crucial partnerships with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, India managed to reach 170 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was expected to give India a quick start to the chase; however, he was troubled by the pace and bounce that Archer managed from the dead Lord’s pitch. In an effort to assert dominance, Jaiswal played a poor shot to Archer, bowling a short ball on off-stump. Jaiswal tried to pull the shot, and the ball went straight up in the air, with Jamie Smith taking an easy catch.
“So, Jaiswal getting out, really bad shot, I’m surprised He just didn’t look to cut it over the off-side, suddenly England are like okay, we are in. He is the player who moves the scoreboard forward.
In a low chase, when you are defending, if you come to bowl and you’ve got a Sehwag, Warner, the opening batters that can take the game away from you and they up 60 for none or one off ten, the game is sort of done,” Stuart Broad said on ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ podcast.
Broad then explained why Jaiswal's wicket opened the gate for England.
“As soon as Karun Nair came in, he is someone who plays each ball on merit, then England could control it and set attacking fields, create pressure. So, I thought that was a really big moment. England making that breakthrough early, Jaiswal gone,” Broad said.
England leads the five-match Test series by 2-1. The fourth Test of the five-match series will begin on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
