Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has stated that opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked unsure of himself as India started their chase of a 193-run target against England in the third Test of the ongoing series at Lord’s.
Needing a solid start, Jaiswal looked fidgety at the crease and was dismissed by Jofra Archer for a duck as the southpaw fell to an ill-timed pull shot. Jaiswal top-edged a short delivery high into the air, resulting in a straightforward catch behind the stumps by Jamie Smith.
While the intention was clear, the choice of shot perplexed many. Known for his precision on the cut, the left-hander unexpectedly chose the pull and suffered the price.
It was Archer who had dismissed him in the first innings, too, and according to former India batter Robin Uthappa, Jaiswal never looked comfortable.
"Yashasvi was genuinely not comfortable from the word go. You could see through the over that he was confused, so to speak, not clear. Maybe not confused, but just not clear as to how he wants to approach it. Because it was only 190 runs, I think he was half and half. It almost seemed like an afterthought, that shot," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
Karun Nair stepped in after Jaiswal's early departure, but he, too, was dismissed due to an error in judgment while facing Brydon Carse. Nair chose to leave the delivery coming into him, incorrectly anticipating the movement, and was dismissed lbw.
"He (Nair) left it at the point of delivery. I don't think he watched it coming in and made that decision as the ball came to him. Until that point, that dude was batting solid, man. He is batting so well," Uthappa added.
England won the game by 22 runs and went 2-1 up in the series. The two sides will meet in the 4th Test of the series in Manchester that begins on July 23.
