Mohammed Siraj was heartbroken when the despite his defensive shot to Shoaib Bashir, the ball rolled onto the stumps and dislodged the bails, as India fell 22 runs short of the 193-run target by England at Lord’s.
Ravindra Jadeja had done brilliantly with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj after India was reduced to 82/7 at one stage and brought the visitors on the cusp of a miracle win. But Bumrah got out to a wild pull shot after his patience ran out, and Siraj was undone by Bashir, as Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61.
With only one wicket remaining and India still needing 46 runs, Siraj walked out to bat. Together with Ravindra Jadeja, he increased the score by 23 runs, giving India hope for an unlikely victory.
At that point, Ravichandran, Ashwin's father, was "assured" that Siraj would hit three sixes off off-spinner Shoaib Bashir to end the match. The manner England captain Ben Stokes was bowling from the end required Ashwin to tell his father to stop making jokes.
"Ben Stokes bowled an unbelievable spell. I was discussing this with my father. He was assured that Siraj would finish it by smashing three sixes. I was asking him to cut down the jokes. Looking at Ben Stokes, he started talking about a bowler from his league games, who used to bowl from both ends.
In both spells of 9.2 and 10 overs, he was bowling at 132-140 kph. At one end, you had Jadeja, standing like a fortress, stitching India's resistance, and on the other, you had Stokes doing the same for England," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Stokes bowled unchanged for 9.2 overs in his first spell and then came back to bowl another 10 on the trot. It was he who broke the resilience of Jasprit Bumrah, targeting him with bouncers. He was named the Player of the Match for his resilience and never-say-die attitude.
Following the events of Day 3 between Shubman Gill and England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, players from both teams got into numerous on-field altercations, making the match intense.
However, Joe Root and Crawley were among the first to put their arms around the Indian pacer to comfort him after Siraj was bowled and England won the match. Ben Stokes also shook hands with Jadeja, who was undefeated at 61, and patted Siraj's chest.
"What a battle. It was an amazing Test match. It was a battle among equals. Both teams were challenging each other to the limits and it ended at this moment. Look at how Crawley and Root are consoling Siraj with an arm around him. The beauty of this Test match was that every player was at loggerheads with each other. It was theatrical," Ashwin said.
With England 2-1, the teams will next face each other in the fourth Test on July 23 in Manchester.
