India captain Shubman Gill was in focus as the visitors lost the third Test to England at Lord’s and went 1-2 down in the five-Test series. Shubman Gill, who took over as captain from Rohit Sharma, has had a decent outing in the series, coming back strongly after losing the first Test in Leeds and winning the second Test at Edgbaston.
However, the Lord’s Test was a complete slow burner as both teams decided to play proper Test cricket and England put the Bazball way on the back burner on the tricky pitch at Lord’s. Things got heated between the players of the two sides as well.
Days three and four led to several instances of India and England players throwing verbal volleys at one another. Shubman Gill was seen giving it to Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett for wasting time on day three. Mohammed Siraj got fined for his send-off to Duckett, and Duckett was heard sledging the India captain when he came out to bat.
Leading India in a Test series for the first time, Gill had no intention of giving up and didn't give his colleagues any instructions to do so. Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, was questioned about the 25-year-old's behavior.
“He will handle it in his way, and he will learn. As a captain, he will learn. He’s a young captain,” Ganguly said as per ANI.
Ganguly also lauded Gill’s batting performance, calling it his finest display in overseas conditions.
“He has done phenomenally as a batsman. This is the best I’ve seen him bat away from home. First the century at Headingley and then back-to-back hundreds in Birmingham,” Ganguly added.
Gill is currently the top scorer in the series, amassing 607 runs at an average of 101.16, including three centuries, with a highest score of 269.
However, Ganguly was left disappointed as India lost the Lord’s Test by just 22 runs.
“The way India have batted in this series so far, they could have chased down 190. The batting quality in this team is absolutely brilliant. They’ll be more disappointed than I am because there was a real opportunity to go 2-1 up in the series. We just needed two partnerships to win. The ones that (Ravindra) Jadeja, (Jasprit) Bumrah, and (Mohammed) Siraj put together showed that with a little more fight at the top, India could have won this game,” Ganguly said.
On Bumrah’s availability, Ganguly said, “Hopefully he’ll recover in time. It depends on his body and how he feels. His physical condition will be key before a decision is made.”
The fourth Test between England and India will begin on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
