Umpire Paul Reiffel drew a lot of flak from fans on Day 4 of the Lord's Test between India and England after a string of poor decisions against the tourists.

Reiffel, a well-respected umpire in the international circuit, made critical errors — first against the Indian pacers and then against Shubman Gill.

Reiffel adjudged Gill out caught behind late on the penultimate day, when India were reeling under pressure in their chase of 193 runs. The Indian captain missed a full-length ball from Brydon Carse, which went straight to the keeper. As England went up in appeal, Reiffel immediately raised his finger.

Gill straightaway opted for DRS, which showed that the ball had missed the edge of his bat by an inch or two.

This was not the only instance that Reiffel made a poor decision against India on Sunday July 12). During England’s second innings with the bat, Reiffel denied Mohammed Siraj an LBW against Joe Root despite two of the batter's stumps being visible at the time of the ball striking the pad.

As India called for a review, replays showed that Root had shuffled across significantly and was struck in line. At the point of impact, the leg stump was clearly visible, raising India's hopes of a breakthrough.

However, the ball-tracking system predicted that the delivery would just clip the leg stump. As it turned out, the umpire's call was upheld and the Indian players were left visibly shocked and disheartened.

Fans slammed Reiffel for poor umpiring in the Test match, highlighting the incidents where he did not give tight decisions in favour of India.

Coming to the match, after bowling England out for 192 in the second innings, India finished Day 4’s play at 58/4 in 17.4 overs, needing 135 more runs on the final day to win the game and go 2-1 up in the five-Test series.
