England batter Harry Brook has come under the scanner for his reckless dismissal on Day 4 of the third Test match against India at Lord’s.
The hosts were already on the back foot, having lost quick wickets in the opening session of their second innings. Brook arrived in the middle with pressure mounting and expectations high, but his response was rather aggressive.
During the 20th over, Brook smashed Akash Deep for two boundaries and a six. However, his intent turned to carelessness as he decided to continue his dominance over the Indian seamer in the 22nd over.
On the third delivery of that over, Brook went for a slog-sweep but failed to connect it and saw the ball crashing into the stumps.
Commentating for Sky Sports, Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara didn’t mince his words as he slammed Harry Brook’s shot selection, calling it a moment of "arrogance" rather than confidence or tactical aggression.
“Brook has scooped, and they've given him a gap, so flick it. I think it's a bit of arrogance, not even overconfidence, it's not even Bazball, it's just arrogance. You're counter-attacking and that is a big, big mistake,” Sangakkara said on-air.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri endorsed his views, expressing disappointment at how a player of Brook’s calibre threw his wicket away during a crucial phase of the match.
“Brook can be destructive—the impact he wanted to make with those two reverse sweeps, he did that. But I think he is too good a player to put his wicket at risk at that stage of the game,” Shastri remarked.
He added, “It was a nothing shot. He was only going to get one run even if he connected. The risk element was huge.”
Harry Brook’s dismissal on 23 reduced England’s innings to 87/4. Apart from Brook, the hosts lost the wickets of Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope in the morning session and head into Lunch with 98/4 on the board.
