After a crushing 336-run defeat against India in the second Test at Edgbaston, England head coach Brendon McCullum has requested a faster, bouncier pitch for the third match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Lord’s, starting from Thursday (July 10).

This comes after both McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes admitted to have misread the Edgbaston track, calling it a “subcontinent-type” surface that favoured India’s bowling attack.

“Something with a bit more pace, a bit more bounce, and maybe a little bit of sideways, hopefully,” McCullum was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The England coach, however, praised Indian bowlers for making the most out of a "subcontinent-type" pitch.

“Obviously we made the decision to bowl first,” McCullum said. “We were thinking that the pitch would get better as the game went on, and we probably got that one wrong. We saw that it was probably more of a subcontinent-type pitch, and I thought India were exceptional.

“They played brilliantly with the bat in hand. Shubman Gill was batting at an elite level. Obviously, the way they bowled — Akash Deep in particular — they’ve grown up playing on those sorts of surfaces, where you’ve got to slam that slightly fuller length, and us bowling first presented them with those opportunities.

"Obviously, the footmarks started to create some issues as well. You don’t always get every decision right.”

After the outcome at Edgbaston, the five-match Test series currently stands level at 1-1. England had chased down a massive 371-run target in the series opener at Headingley to take an early lead.

England have added Gus Atkinson to their squad for the third Test, and there are high chances that injury-prone fast bowler Jofra Archer will make a Test comeback at Lord’s after a gap of four years.
