England captain Ben Stokes ruffled some feathers the wrong way as his team was routed by 336 runs by India in the second Test at Edgbaston of the ongoing five-Test series on day five on Sunday. This was the first time India or any Asian side had won a Test match at the venue.
With this amazing win, India also drew level 1-1 in the five-Test series. India scored more than 1,000 wins with captain Shubman Gill leading with scores of 269 and 161, while India seamers took 18 out of 20 England wickets to fall. Akash Deep starred with 10/187 and 6/99 in the second innings, while Mohammed Siraj had taken 6/70 in the first innings.
In his analysis of the game's outcome, Stokes acknowledged that he had never witnessed that many runs being scored at the location. He went so far as to refer to the Edgbaston surface as a "subcontinent wicket," which ultimately helped the Indian team more than it ought to have.
The 'subcontinent' quality of the ground made it harder for his team to make runs as the game progressed, according to Stokes, who spoke to the BBC's Test Match Special after the game.
"To be honest, it's probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it's got deeper and deeper into the game. You know, there certainly is a little bit in it to start with, and I think we exposed that very, very well early on.
But yeah, then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just, yeah, it became a real tough slog for us and obviously, with the Indian attack and the conditions that they've used to, they were used to and used some of how to expose those conditions, just sort of a little bit better than that can happen sometimes," Ben Stokes stated on BBC Test match special.
The comment by the England skipper didn't go down well with fans, who even labeled Stokes a 'crybaby' for the 'subcontinent pitch' remark.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra reacted to the same and pointed out that Indian pacers took 18 out of 20 wickets to fall and called Ben Stokes’s ‘subcontinent pitch’ remark an interesting one.
“Only two wickets for Indian spinners in two innings. Quite interesting to call it a sub-continental pitch,” Chopra quoted Stokes’ statement on X.
Here is how some other fans reacted to Ben Stokes’ sub-continent’ pitch remark:
