India captain Shubman Gill was over the moon as he led his team to a 336-run win over England in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series. This match was played at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham, and India recorded a historic first win at this venue.
India had batted first after losing the toss and posted 587 runs with Shubman Gill hammering his career-best 269 runs with 30 fours and 3 sixes. He received support from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja who made half-centuries.
In response, England managed 407 runs, mainly due to the 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. Brook made 158 and Smith made 184, but six England batters also got out for ducks, conceding a 180-run lead to India. Mohammed Siraj took 6/70, while Akash Deep took 4 wickets.
Shubman Gill starred again for India with 161 runs and this time as well Jadeja scored a fifty and KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant joined in the fun as well. India posted 427/6d, setting England 608 to win.
Akash Deep then ran through England's top order with wickets of Ben Duckett and Joe Root as England closed play on day four on 72/4. Akash continued his fine form with the wickets of Harry Brook and Ollie Pope.
Ben Stokes with 33, Brydon Carse with 38, and Jamie Smith with 88 tried to delay the inevitable, but Akash Deep picked 6/99 and 10 wickets in the match. England was bowled out for 271 and lost the game by 336 runs.
“All the things we spoke about after the first game, we were spot on with all of those things. Our bowling and fielding were tremendous to see. On this kind of wicket, we knew if we got 400-500 on this kind of wicket, we'd be in the game. Not every time we're going to drop that many catches that we did in Headingley,” Shubman Gill said during the post-match presentation.
“They (fast bowlers) were magnificent and I think the way we were able to get through the top-order, that was important to us, and both those bowlers bowled brilliantly and even Prasidh, he didn't get as many wickets as them, but he also bowled brilliantly. He (Akash Deep) bowled with so much heart. The areas and lengths he hit, he was getting the ball to move both ways. On wickets like these, it's difficult to do that, he was just magnificent for us,” Shubman praised the Indian pacer’s performance.
Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match for his 269 and 161 in the match and spoke on his performance as well.
“I'd say I'm feeling comfortable with my game. Hopefully, if we win the series with my contributions, I'll feel happier. Every day is a learning curve for me. Whenever I go out there, I've said this before, I just want to play as a batsman and I want to think as a batsman and I want to make my decisions and risk management as a batsman. Sometimes when you are out there and thinking as a captain, you don't take that risks which I think as a batsman sometimes is necessary,” he added.
Gill also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will be back for the third Test at Lord’s and stated that he was excited to play at the historic venue for the first time.
“Definitely (Bumrah back at Lord's?). Very excited about that (Lord's Test). Probably the most iconic cricket stadium in the world and as a kid everyone dreams about playing there and I think no bigger honour than to be able to captain your country and lead your team there,” Gill concluded.
The third Test between England and India will be played at the Lord’s from July 10 onwards.
