Shubman Gill, in his second Test as India captain, showed great understanding of the game, as he convinced pacer Mohammed Siraj to bowl according to his plan while planning for England’s Zak Crawley’s wicket in the final innings of the second Test in Edgbaston.
India posted a mammoth 427/6d in the second innings thanks to 161 by captain Shubman Gill and fifties by KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja. This set England a huge target of 608 runs to win the second Test.
And India started brilliantly when Mohammed Siraj had opener Zak Crawley caught by sub Sai Sudharsan at the point for a duck.
Siraj and Gill may be seen discussing the field placement in a video that broadcaster Star Sports posted on social media. "Nahi, main udhar ki baat kar raha hu," the fast bowler is heard saying, demonstrating his insistence on having a different setup.
After attentively listening to him, Gill assured him that he believed there would be an offside catch. He instructed Siraj to use the standard delivery because he thought the wicket was different from the one India had in the Leeds series opener last month.
"Udhar catch jayega. Pichhle mein bhi udhar out hua hain. Mann le! Yeh vaisa wicket hai. Leeds wala wicket nahi hai. Normal daal (There will be a catch. He got out in the same way last time. Just listen to me. This wicket is different from that in Leeds. Go with the normal delivery)," he said.
One fuller that shaped away was pitched by Siraj. The ball sailed low off the bat's open face and landed safely in the palms of substitute fielder Sai Sudharsan after Crawley took the bait and leaned into the drive. Wild with joy, Gill embraced Siraj with a 'told you so' look that was clear.
Here is the video:
England finished day 3 on 72/3 with Akash Deep removing Ben Duckett for 25 and Joe Root for 6 runs. The hosts need a further 536 runs to win the game. Notably, India has never won a Test match at Edgbaston, they have lost 7 matches and drew one.
