India skipper Shubman Gill continued his prolific run of form in the ongoing England tour as he slammed his 8th Test century on Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston.
This was after the 25-year-old notched up his career-best 269 in India’s first innings which helped the visitors rack up a mammoth 587 on the board.
On Saturday (July 5), Gill scored 161 off 162 balls to propel India to 427/6 (declared) in the second essay, thereby setting a staggering target of 608 runs for the hosts.
However, the decision not to declare after crossing 500 raised a few eyebrows. Even England batter Harry Brook tried to tease Gill over the declaration. However, the Indian captain had the best response in store.
“450 declare. It's raining tomorrow. Half day, afternoon, it's raining,” the stump mic caught Brook as saying.
In response, Gill said, “Bad luck for us.” Brook then asked the India captain to “take the draw.”
Earlier, India had gained a lead of 180 runs after bundling out England for 407. Mohammed Siraj (6-70) and Akash Deep (4-88) complemented each other perfectly to claim all 10 English wickets.
The duo of Siraj (1-29) and Akash (2-36) continued to dominated the English batters in the second innings, reducing the home team to 72/3 at stumps. While Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley for a duck, Akash got rid of Ben Duckett (25) and Joe Root (6).
