India captain Shubman Gill continued his rich vein of form in the ongoing England tour as he slammed his 8th Test century on Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston.
This was after the 25-year-old notched up his career-best 269 in India’s first innings which helped the visitors rack up a mammoth 587 on the board.
On Saturday, Gill reached the three-figure mark in 129 deliveries in an innings peppered with 9 fours and 3 maximums as India looked to post another huge score.
In the first innings, the stylish right-hander broke a plethora of records, becoming the first Asian captain to score a double ton in a Test match in England. He also set a new record for highest score by an Indian batter in a Test innings in England, going past the 221 scored by Sunil Gavaskar in 1979.
With his heroics in the second essay, Shubman Gill became only the third Indian captain after Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli to hit hundreds in both innings of a Test match. He also broke record for most runs in debut series as India captain, surpassing Kohli who had amassed 449 runs against Australia in 2014/15 when he took over the charge from MS Dhoni.
Gill was eventually dismissed for 161 and aggregated 380* runs across the two innings, thereby breaking Gavaskar’s record of 344 runs to register most runs by an Indian batter in a Test.
Thanks to his spectacular display, the tourists declared their second innings at 427/6, setting a staggering target of 608 runs in 108 overs for the hosts.
For his record-breaking exploits in the Birmingham Test, Shubman Gill received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on social media platform X.
