India skipper Shubman Gill broke a plethora of records en route to his maiden Test double century against England at Edgbaston on Thursday (July 3).

The 25-year-old became only the sixth Indian captain to slam a double hundred in the longest format of the game, joining MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in the elite list.

Gill resumed Day 2 on 114* and reached the double ton in 311 balls, becoming the first Asian captain to achieve this feat in a Test match in England.

The classy right-hander was eventually dismissed by Josh Tongue for 269 off 387 balls, including 30 boundaries and 3 sixes. His knock propelled the visitors to a mammoth 587/10 in their first innings.

After the close of play on Day 2 in Birmingham, Shubman Gill attributed his success in England to working on “a few things” at the end of the IPL 2025 season.

Before the ongoing series, Gill had scored just 88 runs in three Tests in England at an average of 14.66. However, he has been a different beast on this tour, having scored 424 runs in just three innings at a remarkable average of 141.33.  

“Good position to be in. I worked on a few things and at the end of IPL, which is very important before going into Test cricket. Looking at how things gave gone so far, it is working for me,” Gill said in a chat with Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports.

England went to stumps at 77/3, trailing India in the first innings by 510 runs. Akash Deep, replacing Jasprit Bumrah in the XI at Edgbaston, dismissed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks while Mohammed Siraj got rid of Zak Crawley on 19.

Gill was impressed by his team’s slip catching in the evening session on Thursday. “I did not take any slip catches for the last couple of days because I was batting, but nice to get those catches. Fielding was very important and we discussed about it that if we were half as good in the previous game, things would have been different,” the Indian captain added during the conversation.
