In the first innings of the current second Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham, India defeated England by 587 runs on Thursday, July 3, thanks to perhaps the finest knock of Shubman Gill's Test career.

As a No. 4 batter, Gill faced 387 balls during his time at the crease and amassed 269 runs with 30 fours and 3 sixes. In his 269-run innings, Gill set several hitting records.

Shubman Gill added 203 runs for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who made 89 and 144 runs for the seventh wicket with Washington Sundar, who made 42 runs.

1. Shubman Gill’s 269 was the highest-ever score for an Indian captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254* against South Africa in Pune, back in 2019. 

2. In Test matches outside of Asia, Shubman Gill's score of 269 at Birmingham is also the greatest by an Indian batter. The previous best was 241* scored by Sachin Tendulkar against Australia in Sydney in 2004.

3. After Rahul Dravid (270 in Rawalpindi) and Virender Sehwag (309 in Multan and 254 in Lahore), Shubman Gill is the third Indian to score 250 or more in away Test matches.

4. After Karun Nair's 303* in Chennai in 2016, Shubman Gill's 269 is the second-highest score an Indian has ever made against England in Test matches.

5. Shubman Gill is the sixth Indian captain after MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli (seven times) to score a double century in Test cricket.

6. Shubman Gill at 25 years and 298 days is the second youngest Indian captain after Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (23 years and 239 days) to score a double century in Test cricket.

7. Shubman Gill became the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a century in the first Test as captain and a double century in the 2nd Test as captain.

8. Shubman Gill is the first captain from Asian teams to score a double-ton in SENA countries. The previous record score was 193, scored by Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, against England at Lord’s in 2011.

9. Shubman Gill now has the highest score by an Indian batter in England. His 269 surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at the Oval in 1971.
