India captain Shubman Gill was the best batter by far for the visitors on day one of the second Test against England that got underway on July 2nd at Edgbaston, Birmingham. England won the toss and chose to bowl first.
India made three changes in Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar replacing Sai Sudharsan, and Akash Deep coming in place of Jasprit Bumrah.
Yashasvi Jaiswal made 87 runs, continuing his brilliance in Tests against England. KL Rahul (2), Karun Nair (31), Rishabh Pant (25), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1), all despite starts, failed to score big. Ravindra Jadeja made 41* as he supported the India captain through to the end of day one.
However, Shubman Gill, the captain, stood tall and hammered a brilliant 114* with 12 fours in a grueling knock. He defended and blocked well, subduing his natural aggressive instincts, and took India to 310/5 at the end of day one.
Gill, who came in at number four, played like someone who was incredibly focused on grinding it out and had a great deal of patience and responsibility.
Despite his best efforts, England pacer Brydon Carse was unable to undermine Gill's confidence. Carse was seen making a fake no-ball signal with his left hand during his run-up before the fourth ball of the 34th. But in the final moment, Gill changed his mind, which somewhat irritated Carse.
