Before the second Test match against England, which is scheduled to begin in Birmingham on July 2, former India off-spinner R Ashwin has asked Team India coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill to speak with Rishabh Pant.
In Leeds, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had a fantastic batting performance, smashing hundreds in both innings. However, India lost the Test by five wickets, proving that his valiant efforts were insufficient.
"Rishabh had a fabulous game as a batter. I would like to repeat that Rishabh has got a great defence. There is not a single shot in the book that he cannot play," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.
Ashwin did offer Pant one piece of advice, though: the next time he reaches 100, he needs to attempt turning it into a double century.
"I sometimes feel if I were Gautam Gambhir or Shubman Gill, I would take Rishabh Pant aside and say, ‘Bhai, tune kya batting kiya hai, kamaal ka batting kiya tune’ (Brother, you’ve batted brilliantly). I would love to be a batter with the kind of ability you have. But can I request you to make a double hundred next time when you're batting on 130?
You know we won’t get much contribution from the lower order, so please take the team to the last wicket. But what a fabulous batsman, what a fabulous cricketer, what a talented player" said Ashwin.

When asked about the positives from the opening Test loss to England, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir sounded unimpressed to praise individual genius, such as Pant's twin hundreds, stating that everything comes down to outcomes, which his side was unable to attain.
Gambhir, who never holds back or hides his disappointment, responded bluntly to a query about Pant's efforts, which ultimately prevented India from winning the match.
