England pacer Josh Tongue has declared that the hosts aren't even considering drawing the first Test against India at Headingley, Leeds.
The match is evenly poised after four days of hard-fought contest between the two teams. While England need 350 more runs in the chase of 371, the visitors are 10 wickets away from sealing victory on the final day.
Addressing the media after the close of play on Day 4, Tongue said they will just ‘go for the win’ while also adding that he sees no reason why their batters could not lead them over the line.
The Three Lions seem to hate draws under Ben Stokes’ leadership, accepting only one of those from 36 Tests — a washed out Ashes 2023 game at Old Trafford.
“No. [We will] just go for the win. That’s the clear message in the changing room. It’s just [about] being as positive as we can. They’re going to bowl well at times tomorrow: it’s just crucial we soak up that bit of pressure and reapply it. I don’t see why we can’t chase that down," Tongue said in the post-day presser.
“We are very confident. Looking at our batting lineup, it’s very strong. We’ll play a positive brand of cricket. Chasing 371 is going to be a good thing for us to do tomorrow. Obviously, getting through the first 30-40 minutes will be crucial but hopefully, we’ll get the winning runs tomorrow," he added.
Riding on centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118), India posted 364 in their second innings. They would be disappointed to have squandered the advantage on Day 4, losing their last six wickets for just 31 runs.
Chasing the target, the opening duo of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett helped England to 21 runs in six overs without the loss of a wicket at stumps.
Tongue played an instrumental role in getting England to a position where a win is possible. He dismissed three of the last four Indian batters, making sure the tail didn’t wag. He did something similar in the first innings as well, which has earned him a nickname — ‘the mop’.
“I’ve done it twice now, so I might have to start calling myself that," Tongue said. “Obviously that’s part of the game. I’m happy to contribute to the team by getting those wickets."
