Rishabh Pant on Monday (June 23) created history by becoming only the second wicketkeeper in history to score a century in both innings of a Test match. He achieved the feat on Day 4 of the first Test against England at Headingley.
The southpaw joined Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower in the elite list, who had achieved this feat against South Africa at Harare in 2001.
Pant followed up his brilliant 134 in the first innings with an entertaining 118 in the second essay, helping the visitors take control of the match alongside KL Rahul, who scored a ton (137) of his own.
The swashbuckling left-hander was severe on all kind of bowlers as his 140-ball knock included 15 boundaries and three sixes.
Speaking on Sky Sports, former India head coach Ravi Shastri lauded Rishabh Pant’s fearless century in the Leeds Test. Shastri also highlighted Pant’s sharp cricket brain behind the perceived recklessness.
“People say Pant's batting defies logic, but there is an element of a sharp cricket brain behind it. He knows when to counterattack,” Shastri said, adding that India will be pleased with the way Rahul’s technical solidity complemented Pant’s fireworks.
"There is plenty of food for thought, but India will be very happy after a technical masterpiece from Rahul and the flamboyance and exuberance that you can imagine from Pant," he added.
Thanks to their three-figure scores, India posted 364 in their second innings, setting a target of 371 for the hosts.
Chasing the target, the opening duo of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett helped England to 21 runs in six overs without the loss of a wicket at stumps. As play resumes on Tuesday, Day 5 will have all to play for both teams.
