Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, took a plane home from England for "personal reasons." He had previously communicated the change in intentions to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Indian squad is now in England for the five-match Test series, which begins on June 20 in Leeds. Today, they have an intra-squad game planned. The intra-squad game will be supervised by the support personnel, according to information obtained.
“He has informed us that he is flying back home due to personal reasons. He will join the squad at the earliest soon. He won’t be at the intra-squad game and support staff will be looking after the preparations ahead of the Test series,” a BCCI source confirmed to the Indian Express.
But as per a Times of India report, Gambhir is already in Delhi and is with his mother, who is currently in a hospital in Delhi's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The head coach is expected to return to the team prior to the first Test match against England, which begins on June 20, while the therapy is still ongoing. His mother's health will determine the precise departure date.
The current coaching staff for the Indian team includes Ryan Ten Doeschate as assistant coach, T Dilip as fielding coach, Morne Morkel as bowling coach, and Sitanshu Kotak as batting coach. Last week, the whole Indian team went to England. Two warm-up matches against the England Lions were played by a few members of the Test team.
