After the culmination of the IPL 2025 season, India’s leading cricketers will travel to England for a five-match Test series, salted to start on June 20 at Headingley.
Ahead of the all-important tour, senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have called time on their Test career, leaving a big void in the Indian team. Hence, the onus will be on youngsters like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal to take charge of the batting unit in England.
According to an IANS report, Gill is quietly preparing for sterner tests ahead even as he leads Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL.
Gill was reportedly spotted practicing with the red ball during a net session in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (May 22). While his GT teammates focused on power-hitting and death-over strategies, the stylish right-hander took a brief detour from the slam-bang format to hone his technique against the red cherry.
The report citing sources further claimed that Shubman is intent on refining his red-ball game. The daunting series in England will be a major test of India's batting depth and temperament, and Gill seems keen on ensuring that he's prepared both mentally and technically.
Gill has already stamped his authority in the IPL with consistent performances and clean hitting, having scored 601 runs in 12 games this season. However, he knows that England, with its seaming conditions and world-class bowling, demands a different level of preparedness.
According to multiple reports, Shubman Gill is the front-runner to become India’s new Test captain after Rohit’s retirement. India are likely to announce their squad and new Test captain on May 25.
Ahead of India’s Test series against England, India A will play two four-day matches against the England Lions at Canterbury and Northampton. The two matches will take place on May 30 and June 6.
The BCCI has confirmed that Gill will join the India A squad ahead of the second match, with the IPL final scheduled to be played on June 3.
