The India squad for the England tour and the new Test skipper will probably be revealed on Saturday, May 24. Following Saturday's selection meeting, announcements may be made, and a news conference is anticipated, as per an India Today report.
According to insiders, the announcements will probably be made at noon. Since Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from Test cricket earlier in May, India has been searching for a new captain.
Since then, a number of people have been mentioned as possible candidates for the position, including Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Jasprit Bumrah. But according to sources, Bumrah chose to withdraw from the race, leaving Gill and Pant as the options for captaincy.
Due to workload management, the Indian bowler, who returned to action following a protracted injury layoff, is unlikely to participate in all five Test matches in England. Following informal discussions with Gill and Pant, it was reported on May 20 that the BCCI was still unsure of Rohit's successor.
One of the selectors was hesitant to name Gill captain since he hasn't secured a berth in the Test squad, according to the Sky Sports source. It was proposed that the 25-year-old would benefit more from serving as vice-captain at present.
India's new World Test Championship cycle will begin with the England tour, as they begin life without some of its more seasoned players. A few slots in the starting lineup have become available as a result of players like Virat Kohli, Rohit, and R Ashwin declaring their retirement from the team.
Before the main India squad travels to UK, India A will clash with England Lions in two four-day games and then India seniors as well. The competition for slots will heat up with likes of Karun Nair, Ishan Kishan and others will be making a strong case during these two FC games.
