The BCCI selectors have not yet chosen who will take Rohit Sharma's place as Test captain, despite having informal discussions with Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.
Before the start of this summer's series in England on June 20, the skipper position is vacant since Rohi Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier in May. This week, India is anticipated to reveal their fresh skipper and Test team for the England series.
According to an Indian cricket source who spoke to Sky Sports News, Sharma had originally intended to play in the England series and retire in the middle of the series, much like MS Dhoni did during a series against Australia in 2014.
However, selectors wanted consistency throughout the series, so they gave Sharma the chance to attend but not as captain, and he chose to retire instead. Virat Kohli will also be missing from the England series after announcing his retirement from Tests.
As per Sky Sports, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the prime candidates for India Test captaincy. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah was also considered to be one of the leading options, since he had previous experience of captaining India.
However, the pacer opted out of the race as reports stated that Bumrah was not sure of playing all five Tests in England owing to his fragile back and injury record.
The BCCI selectors have had informal talks with both Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, but remain undecided about who should become the next India Test captain.
One BCCI selector is hesitant to give Gill the captaincy because his spot in the team is uncertain and suggested he would be more suited to the vice-captaincy position.
