Virat Kohli has yet to clarify to the Indian cricket board (BCCI) whether he is willing to go to England for the upcoming five-Test series, despite having expressed his desire to end his spectacular red-ball career.

The Times of India has learned that Kohli has not backed down from his decision despite the board's request to review it. This follows Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format ahead of what will be a vital series.

According to sources, the BCCI and the selection panel are still trying to convince him to travel to England to boost the Indian batting lineup, given that the middle order will be an inexperienced one in his absence.

“Kohli had informed the selectors two weeks ago (about his desire to quit Tests). They were trying to persuade him to play in the Test series against England. However, he is still firm on his stance. The final call will come close to the selection meeting next week,” sources told the Times of India.

In recent years, Kohli has had difficulty in the format. His repeated dismissals in Australia late last year—caught fishing outside the stump—even had some wonder if he still merited a spot in the starting lineup.

The selectors are eager for him to be included in India's squad despite his recent setbacks and extended slump in performance to provide experience to a revamped squad where Shubman Gill has emerged as the clear favorite to be captain.

If Kohli's absence turns out to be true, the selectors may have yet another dilemma about who to replace him at No. 4 in the batting order. The selectors could have to consider Karun Nair or Shreyas Iyer as potential options if Kohli doesn't change.

Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar has emerged as a strong contender to replace Sarfaraz Khan in the squad.
