Riding on a brilliant 159-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, India finished the first day of the third Test on a strong note at Trent Bridge.

The skipper and his deputy notched up their half-centuries as India rebuilt their innings after wickets had fallen in quick succession towards the end of the first session. Despite an impressive 60-run opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan (35 runs) and KL Rahul (23 runs), all-rounder Chris Woakes reduced the visitors to 82/3 at Lunch.

However, Kohli and Rahane fought valiantly against the English seamers in the second session. The duo played cautiously but also punished the bad balls frequently. Just when they were looking to take the game away from England, Stuard Broad got rid of Rahane (81 runs) courtesy an outstanding reflex catch from Alastair Cook in the first slip.

After Rahane’s dismissal, Kohli forged a 38-run stand with Hardik Pandya. The Indian captain was looking all set for his second ton of this Test series but a tossed up leg-break from Adil Rashid sent him packing on 97. Kohli was livid with himself after the dismissal.

Virat’s wicket led to debutant Rishabh Pant arrival at the crease. Known for his flamboyance style of play, Pant stamped his authority in Test cricket with a second ball six off Rashid.

In the last hour, the pair of Pandya and Rishabh added 28 runs for the sixth wicket before the former perished at the stroke of stumps on 18. Pant remained unbeaten on 22 as India finished the Day 1 on 307/6 in 87 overs.

Twitter experts were impressed to see the way Kohli and Rahane stood up tall amidst pressure situations while they were in awe of the young Rishabh Pant’s audacity.

Here are some of the tweets from the first day’s play:
