India opener Shikhar Dhawan is yet to make a mark with the willow on the England tour but he is at the top of his game on the field.
During the second T20I against England in Cardiff on Friday (July 6), Dhawan exhibited an athletic piece of fielding to get rid of the English skipper Eoin Morgan. During the 14th over, Morgan hooked a short-pitched delivery off Hardik Pandya towards deep fine leg.
For a brief moment, it looked like the ball will sail over the boundary ropes for half a dozen. However, Dhawan, who was not right back at the fence, stretched upwards with a leap to grab a stunning catch. Morgan was in utter disbelief as he made his way to the pavilion for 17 off 19 balls.
Here’s the video:
Dhawan’s spectacular catch has received an ultimate accolade from the legendary Jonty Rhodes, who is widely regarded as the greatest fielder to have played the game of cricket. Taking to Twitter, Jonty compared Dhawan to a kabaddi player.
“@SDhawan25 what a catch - Kabaddi could do with your skills!! #IndvEng” Jonty Rhodes tweeted.
Despite Dhawan’s brilliance on the field, India lost the match by 5 wickets to England with Hales (58* off 41 balls) scoring 12 runs in the final over off Bhuvneshwar Kumar to seal the deal. With this win, the Eoin Morgan led side also squared the Twenty20 International series with one match to go in Bristol on Sunday (July 8).
