Madhya Pradesh skipper Rajat Patidar was involved in a rather bizarre moment during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final against Mumbai at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday (December 15).
Patidar refused to leave the field after a shocking decision from the third umpire. The incident took place in the final moments of the first innings.
Patidar was not one bit pleased when TV umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan overturned the on-field umpire’s call for a wide off the last ball after being referred upstairs by Mumbai with the DRS.
Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur bowled a slower delivery outside the off-stump, which was missed by Patidar even as he shuffled across to nudge the ball.
Despite the ball pitching outside the popping crease, the TV umpire revoked the on-field umpire’s call, ruling that the batter had moved across the line. However, Patidar protested against the decision and urged the on-field umpires to have another look at the decision.
The third umpire soon had another replay of his call and reversed his own decision. “Extremely sorry, the ball had pitched outside the popping crease. I did not see that,” Ananthapadmanabhan was heard saying on the official broadcast.
The decision change allowed Rajat Patidar to face one more delivery, and he made the most of it. The Madhya Pradesh captain hammered Thakur’s full toss for a huge six to finish with 81* off 40 balls, propelling his team to 174/8 in 20 overs.
