Amid the anticipation, South Africa’s new T20 league, SA20, got underway on Tuesday (January 10) at Newlands, Cape Town.
In the opening fixture, MI Cape Town outclassed Paarl Royals to register a comprehensive eight-wicket victory.
Opting to bowl first, MI Cape Town restricted Paarl Royals to a modest 142/7 in 20 overs on the back of pacer Jofra Archer’s outstanding bowling performance. On his return to cricket after a lengthy injury lay-off, Archer returned with the figures of 3 for 27 in his four overs.
It was a poor batting display from the Royals as no one managed to play an impactful knock. Jos Buttler was the top scorer with 42-ball 51.
In reply, MI Cape Town rode on young batting sensation Dewald Brevis’ unbeaten 70 off 41 balls to get over the line with 27 deliveries to spare.
Fondly known as ‘Baby AB’ for his AB de Villiers-like batting style, Brevis took the Royals bowling attack to the cleaners. His knock was studded with 4 boundaries and 5 massive sixes.
With his breathtaking shots, the 19-year-old didn’t only leave the commentators in awe but the cricket fraternity was also stunned, including the likes of AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn.
