Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was the toast of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 quarter-final match against Uttar Pradesh on November 28, 2022. He not only scored his maiden List-A double century but also hit 7 sixes in an over, becoming the first batter to do so.
In the match being played at the Sardar Patel Stadium B Ground, Motera, Ahmedabad, after being put into bat first by UP captain Karan Sharma, Maharashtra put up 330/5 in 50 overs with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading from the front with the bat. Ankit Bawne and Azim Kazi made 37 each, but they were the second-highest run-getters.
Gaikwad hammered 220* in 159 balls with 10 fours and 16 sixes to his name. Not only was this his maiden List-A double ton, but he was also the 11th Indian to achieve this feat in 50-overs cricket.
However, the biggest reason for his fame came when Gaikwad hit Shiva Singh, the UP left-arm spinner, who bowled the 49th over of the innings, for seven sixes in a row, one of which came off a no-ball and the subsequent free hit.
He now holds the joint record for the most runs in an over with 43 along with Brett Hampton and Joe Carter, off Willem Ludick, for Northern Districts against Central Districts in a Ford Trophy game in 2018.
However, his 7 sixes in an over made him the first batter in List-A cricket to do so.
The Indian cricket fraternity lauded Ruturaj Gaikwad’s brilliant effort of 220* and seven sixes in an over on Twitter.
